Santorini’s vineyards were shaped the same way the island’s awe-inspiring topography was – by a giant volcanic eruption about 3,600 years ago. The eruption blanketed the island with light pumice gravel, sand, and black lava stone – which eventually helped the grapes become resistant to the phylloxera epidemic that wiped out most of Europe’s vineyards in the late 19th century. As a result, most of the vineyards covering this stunning island are of their original rootstock and more than 100 years old.
