Orvieto, in southwestern Umbria, is one of the most striking, memorable and enjoyable hill towns in Central Italy. Less than 90 minutes from Rome, Orvieto sits majestically high above the Italian landscape, perfectly situated on a Tula rock of volcanic stone. The name Orvieto DOC is reserved exclusively for white wine. Today, the wines of Orvieto have followed market trends and are offered as a dry wine, with a scent of peach, and moderate acidity. However, the traditional style of golden, semi-sweet Orvieto Abboccato, historically adored by popes and princes, is still produced and is an elegant wine made from over-ripe grapes affected by noble rot, which gives it unique characteristics.
